WordPress MU 2.7 Released!

// January 29th, 2009 // 2 Comments » // Wordpress

After much anticipation, the new version of WordPress MU have finally been released! Many of us have been waiting for the new version since the regular WordPress 2.7 version was released a few months ago.

I have been waiting for WPMU 2.7 so I can launch Explore With Me, so this weekend’s task is now to upgrade the site to the new version and make sure it all works as it should.

BuddyPress Beta 2 will be released sometime in the next few hours so hopefully I will be able to test both WPMU and BP Beta 2 and officially launch Explore With Me within the next two weeks.

I am yet to look at WPMU 2.7, but I am sure I’ll be able to get my hands on it tonight!

Wish me luck!

Are You Addicted to Twitter?

// January 25th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // How To, The Internet

I signed up to Twitter in June last year and have only started to really us it in the last month or so. The first time I signed up I thought “this isn’t bad”, found a few followers and then didn’t log into it for a few months.

In the last month or so I have been using Twitter a lot more. I have nearly 100 followers and am following about 136 twits. I use it not only to let people know what I am doing and thinking, but now I use it to keep up to date with WPMU, BuddyPress, freelance jobs, motorsport news, travel news and even some American guy who sold everything he owned in 2007 and has been travelling the world since!

I now find myself logging into Twitter before I do anything else to check my updates – even before I open up my e-mail. I also make sure I check it before I go to bed of a night. I got me thinking….am I addicted to Twitter?

I found this article which I thought I had to share with you! You’re addicted to Twitter when…

  • Load Twitter first thing in the morning before you check your email.
  • Tweet something as the last waking moment before you go to bed.
  • When you meet someone for the first time after asking their name, the next question you ask is if they follow you on Twitter.
  • The next question you ask this new person is how many followers they have.
  • You check your Twitter Grader daily.
  • You check your Twitter following growth daily (or hourly).
  • You feel lame if you haven’t Tweeted in an hour.
  • You always Tweet what you’re doing where ever you are.
  • You look at people who don’t use Twitter as aliens from another planet.
  • You can’t remember life before Twitter.
  • You have grown to hate email because you’d rather use Twitter.
  • You review every new Twitter application as soon as it’s available.
  • You post more than 100 Twitter updates per day.
  • more…

I am not that bad yet! Are you?

Goodbye Entrecard?

// January 19th, 2009 // 7 Comments » // The Internet

I am thinking of removing the Entrecard widget on this blog as it is not doing much in way of traffic these days. When the blog was new it was a great way to bring in some traffic, but now I think the blog is doing well enough to survive on its own.

I get a handful of hits per week from Entrecard, and those users do visit the blog from Entrecard just drop their card and move on to the next site anyway – so the traffic isn’t traffic that is going to keep on coming back.

I think Entrecard is great for new blogs and for bloggers who want to bring in easy traffic. In the early days most of my traffic was from Entrecard but now as the blog has gathered a bit of pace and is doing well in the search engines I reckon only about 5% of my monthly hits actually come from via Entrecard.

It takes a bit of work to drop cards and get credits so you can advertise on other blogs, and this does not always convert into hits. When I do campaign I might get a small increase in traffic for that day but then the next day I am back to normal.

I rather good traffic – people who read my content and want to come back. Entrecard users just come here to drop their card so they can increase their credits, so my content isn’t really being read.

I think I’ll remove the widget sometime this week!

Projects Update

// January 15th, 2009 // 2 Comments » // Projects, Wordpress

As many of you know I have a few projects that I am currently working on. Here is a quick update…

  • Explore With Me: The site has been completed, BuddyPress Beta 1 is up and running, and members are joining at a steady rate. I am still saying that the site is not yet officially launched as I am waiting for the new version of WordPress MU 2.7 and BuddyPress version 1. There is no word yet on WPMU as to when it will be released, however rumours suggest it might be at the end of the month. BuddyPress v1 is set be released February 9, so once testing is complete the site will be officially launched and I’ll start the task of promoting it.

    Hits are very steady and encouraging at this early stage. I am getting a lot of traffic from the BuddyPress website, but that also means I am getting a lot of people looking at the site to check out BuddyPress rather than interested in the site. Though at this early stage anything that spreads the word is a good thing.

    As for revenue, I am making a bit of money from Google Adsense. The affiliate links have not made any money yet, but people are clicking on them so it is just a matter of time.

  • Free BuddyPress Themes: This venture is very new and still pretty raw…oh and the blog is pretty empty. The site relies on users submitting their themes for others to download, but as BuddyPress is new, I don’t think many people have got past the point of installing and testing it. Once version 1 is released I think the site will begin to grow.

    Traffic is been fantastic in the past week. I have had more traffic to the site than this site got in the past two months. There is plenty of interest, but there are no themes to download as yet. I am getting the majority of traffic from the BuddyPress forums and Google searches.

Things to Do When Creating a New Site

// January 12th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // How To, The Internet

I have created a few websites and blogs over the years and each time I tend to do exactly the same things in terms of setup, design and marketing. In the early stages of creating a new site, each site is pretty much the same no matter what kind of content you are going to upload.

Every website needs a domain name and a host server. The domain name is normally dependant on the type of site you are launching and choosing a host will depends on your needs. Unless you have a massive website with a lot of videos, music and photos, generally the basic hosting package is enough. Most good hosts now offer anywhere between 1 and 5 GB of storage as their basic package, storage shouldn’t initially be an problem.

Other things to consider when looking for a web host are mySQL databases, PHP, ASP, Windows or Linux and E-Mail addresses. It will depend on your needs as to whether you need a Windows or Linux based server, but generally Linux servers are cheaper and support both PHP and mySQL. If you are creating an ASP or .NET based site then you’ll normally need a Windows box.

In terms of design I normally create the site for 800×600 browsers as when I was taught web design this was the most common screen resolution. I should probably increase this now as monitors are getting bigger and bigger. It is also a good idea to test the site in a number of web browsers as they all interprete HTML differently.

Once the site is uploaded to your server, the next task is to bring traffic to the site. There are a number of things I do to get the site bringing in some traffic.

  • Submit your site to search engines: There are plenty of free websites where you can submit your URL to search engines. Most services will submit your site to Google and Yahoo, and also a bunch of other search engines.
  • Add an XML site map to Google: To assist Google in finding your web pages you should create an XML sitemap and upload it. If you search for “Google XML sitemap” you’ll find a number of websites who offer this service.
  • Social networks: Submit a few pages of your site to social bookmark networks such as Digg and StumbleUpon. Twitter is also a good way to promote a new site.
  • Forums: If you find a few forums that cover the topic of your website then add it to your signature and make a few posts. Don’t just create a new post to advertise your new site as it will most probably get you banned or your post removed.

Once the site is up and running, designed and listed in the search engines, then it is time to improve the site and generate more traffic. No project is ever complete…

What do you religiously do each time you create a new site?

Free BuddyPress Themes

// January 8th, 2009 // No Comments » // Buddypress

I started a new project last night – Free BuddyPress Themes. I came up with the idea on Tuesday so I registered a domain name, got some web hosting sorted out and then built the WordPress based site last night. The site is now up and running, however I do need to do a bit more work on it before it is complete.

The idea of the site is to share BuddyPress Themes with other BuddyPress users. The site will depend on users submitting their designs via an online form. Once I receieve the theme I will approve it and then upload it to the blog for users to download.

As far as I am aware there are no other BuddyPress Theme websites around – although it is only early days for BuddyPress and I expect there will be a lot of BP theme sites popping up over the coming months.

It is fairly bare at the moment as not many people have designed their own theme yet. Hopefully once the plugin gets more exposure, users will start to develop their own themes and then submit them to FreeBuddyPressThemes.com!

I am not expecting to win by any means, but if we can make it into the final round of voting it will give the blog great exposure and hopefully drive up hits! Plus, it will be nice to see the hard work pay off!

Goals for 2009

// January 7th, 2009 // 2 Comments » // Project Blogger

I have spent the past few days thinking of what I want out of this blog in 2009. I think it is important to set yourself some goals for your website or blog, especially if you want it to grow and eventually start earning an income from it.

The original “Project Blogger” plan was to create a blog that generates revenue. I did that in the first month of launching the site. By “revenue” I mean I made about $6 from the blog during the first month. I guess that is considered making money from blogging.

I think I need to redefine my goals this year, especially if I want to succeed and make more money. After a little bit of thought and consideration I have set myself the following goals for 2009.

  • Define a purpose for this blog: At the moment I blog about a range of topics  including Domaining, WordPress, Affiliate marketing, web design, social networking, BuddyPress, my project work, making money online, blogging, and so on. I think I need to set a clear purpose for this blog and stick to it. “Project Blogger” will remain the underlying theme of the blog, but I need to establish a niche in order to engage more readers. I think I will stick to “blogging”. This means I will still blog about WordPress, BuddyPress, themes, plugins, making money, social networking and my projects that revolve around blogging. So that pretty much means I am dropping blogging about domaining!
  • Increase subscribers: I think this is important for my blog. At the moment I have a handful of subscribers, but this figure seems to hover around the same number. One of the goals I have set it to increase my subscribers and make sure they stay. I have not set a specific number, however I would like to see a massive improvement in this area.
  • Increase revenue: This blog generates revenue every month, however I want more than just a few dollars a month from it. I want to generate enough revenue so that I can put it back into the blog for contests and advertising and then a little bit for myself.
  • Have fun: I do enjoy blogging and maintaining this bog, however sometimes in 2008 I found myself frustrated and annoyed that I couldn’t think of anything to blog about, that I wasn’t making enough money, and that I felt like I was wasting my time. I want to enjoy myself this year and not stress about so many things!

Hopefully I can look back on 2009 in 12 months time and say that I met all of my goals. It will take some hard work and dedication – but as long as it is fun! That I think is the most important goal. The minute I hate doing this I should give up as it is not going to benefit neither you or I.

Renew or Drop?

// January 4th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // Domaining

It has been a while since I blogged about domaining. Ever since NameSeek was acquired by Pacific Octane I have not been doing as much reading and research as I once did, and I have not brought a domain name since June 2008.

I have a bunch of domain names that are due to expire in March and as always I have to make a decision whether I want to spend the money to renew them for another year, or let them expire. The domains that are expiring are parked and aren’t making me much money. I have earnt a few dollars here and there from them, but I don’t think it justifies keeping them.

I could develop the domains but that would mean spending money on hosting, and dedicating some time to them. Even then I don’t know how much I would make from them.

However on the other hand I think the domain names will be worth something to someone one day – just not yet. They are fairly specific domains so they will only appeal to a certain niche. I could even approach a few companies to see if they might be interested in buying them.

What to do?
