// April 30th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // Buddypress

Last week I decided to hold off on the BuddyPress Theme Contest until BuddyPress v1.0 was released just in case there were any last minute changes which might mean some themes would not work with BP.

BuddyPress v1.0 Has Arrived!

// April 30th, 2009 // No Comments » // Buddypress

The first official version of BuddyPress was released earlier today! After a year of development, Andy Peatling and the BuddyPress team have officially released the very first stable version of the WordPress MU plugin that turns your blog into a social community.

This is the first of many versions to coming – with status updates and a photo gallery coming later on in the year. No doubt plugin and theme developers will start coming out of the woodwork to make this fantastic plugin even better.

The community has played a massive part in this project, but a massive thanks has to go out to Andy Peatling who turned this project into the most eagerly awaiting WordPress plugin that has ever been offered within the WordPress family.

Check out more info here (even I get a mention!)

Explore With Me is built on BuddyPress.

Intergrating WPMU, BP & bbPress

// April 28th, 2009 // No Comments » // Buddypress, Wordpress

Last week I made another attempt at trying to make BuddyPress work with bbPress (WordPress forums) and after a late night I finally got it working. Due to the fast pace of the development of BuddyPress, as well as having to deal with a beta version of WordPress MU 2.7.1 and an alpha version of bbPress, most of the online tutorials were out of date which didn’t help the task of making all three applications work together.

I managed to get this working a few weeks earlier without any issues, but so much had changed within a sort period of time. Thanks to a few friends on Twitter I finally managed to make it work as it should.

Since then, Chris from “The Easy Button” has put together a fantastic online tutorial on intergrating WPMU, BP and bbPress. I ran through it in a matter of minutes, rather than hours and everything is very well documented and explained – and best of all it works!

If anyone is looking to setup forums with BuddyPress then this is THE guide for you!

BuddyPress Theme Contest on Hold

// April 27th, 2009 // No Comments » // Buddypress

The BuddyPress Free Contest being held at Free BuddyPress Themes has been put on hold until the release of BuddyPress version 1. I got a lot of concerns from people who were waiting for the v1 release just in case there were any changes that would render their theme useless.

This is a fair call and I think everyone will benefit from having the most up to date themes available to them once the contest has been run and won.

With BP v1 out this week, I will resume the contest on the weekend and leave a month or so until submissions are due.

Upgrades – BP & WPMU

// April 27th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // Buddypress, Wordpress

I spent the good part of Saturday upgrading Explore With Me to the latest version of WordPress MU and then BuddyPress RC2. To my surprise, everything worked in the end and there were no major issues considering the fact that I had to remove BuddyPress and re-install it.

As of BuddyPress RC2, it is only compatible with WPMU 2.7.1. This allows users to install BuddyPress (and any other plugin) via WPMU 2.7.1 which will make any future versions a lot easier to manage. All you should have to do now is click “Upgrade” in the plugin section of the dashboard, and everything will download to your server and it install itself automatically.

At the end of this month the eagerly awaiting BuddyPress version 1 will be out so that will mean another upgrade next weekend. Hopefully that is all for a while!

WordPress MU 2.7.1 Released

// April 21st, 2009 // No Comments » // General

As of a few hours ago, WordPress MU 2.7.1 has been officially released! You can download the new version from here.

You can find more info regarding the release from here.

Personally, as a WPMU user I’d like to thank Donncha O Caoimh and the guys working on WPMU. It really is a stand out product – and best of all it remains free. Thanks guys for all the hard work!

When Does a Project End?

// April 21st, 2009 // No Comments » // Projects

I am currently running 3 websites, all are WordPress based and all of them require effort and a few hours a week of work. I just finished v2 of Explore With Me and am very happy with it, but now it is time to give Free BuddyPress Themes a makeover.

I was already thinking about Free BuddyPress Themes while I was working on Explore With Me, and now I am already looking towards Explore With Me v3. Once Free BuddyPress Themes v2 is ready and rolled out, I also want to find some time to give this blog a makeover. I have been using this same theme for about 9 months now and need something fresh.

Once I finshed all these updates, I will probably go through the process again and again. I am never happy with my sites, there is always something I know needs doing, and with technology changing so fast, especially with WordPress MU and BuddyPress, I need to stay on top of things.

Once I get the idea in my head that I am going to make an upgrade, I need to do it sooner rather than later. I just cannot let things go – once I tell myself it is going to be done then I have to do it or the exisiting site will just drive me crazy.

But with 3 projects at the moment and possible another coming on soon – when does it end? Long gone are the days of having a website setup and letting it sit for 3 years before you upgrade it.

Google PageRank

// April 18th, 2009 // No Comments » // General, Projects

I decided to check the PageRank of my websites today and was suprised to see that Explore With Me now has a PageRank of 3. We have been working hard in the past few weeks to gain a little bit more exposure with the site, trying to encourage travellers to join the social networking site.

Last week we went live with a modified layout and have had some positive feedback. The next big update will be WordPress MU 2.7.1 and BuddyPress v1 which will hopefully be released within the next few weeks.

The PageRank for this blog has dropped to 0 for some reason. I cannot understand why we have lost the PageRank 3 ranking which the blog held for a few months. We have had more traffic over the past few months so it does not really make sense and I cannot find an explaination as to why it would have been taken away.

It is still early days for Free BuddyPress Themes so there is no PageRank yet, but with the contest and a bit of publicity within the WPMU/BuddyPress community it won’t be long hopefully.

Living the Internet Lifestyle

// April 14th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // General, Making Money

The more I concentrate on my internet projects, make money online and read about internet business success stories, the more I want to become a part of the internet lifestyle. Basically – I do not want to work a 9 – 5 job forever and I want the flexibility to “live” life and make money to support my lifestyle.

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to work for myself. I never wanted to be a small, tiny, non-existent employee apart of a massive global corporate world where people who are out of touch with reality make decisions that affect thousands of people – and that is what I am at the moment, just another replaceable employee working for a large firm.

I am not much of a risk taker when it comes to money, so I wouldn’t be the type to naturally just resign from my job and attempt to start an internet business without making sure I was generating enough income to survive before I left my job.

However – I am moving back to Australia in a few months and will obviously need to leave my job in Ireland to return home, so really it is a great excuse to attempt to build an internet business in the months leading up to my relocation and then concentrate on it once I return to Sydney and start to look for a job. If I am successful, then I can hold off looking for a job, and if not, then back to working 8 hours a day.

I am under no illusions of how difficult it will be starting my own internet based business – but at the same time I have had some luck with it in recent months. For one example, I have a number of freelance jobs in the next month that would make me enough money to survive on if I didn’t have my full time job wage.

To begin with, 8 hour days will seem like a dream compared to the hours that I will need to put in to make this successful. But in saying that, as I am working for myself, and with the time zone difference in Australia compared the rest of the world I can pretty much make up my own hours and decide when I want to work. Most of my freelance work so far has been in America and the UK, so being in Australia I can be more flexible with my time – and does “time” exist on the internet?

The reason for me wanting to be my own boss is so that I can do what I want, when I want. I could work anywhere in the world for months at the time, and still make the same amount of money. I can take a holiday whenever I want and still make money, I can sleep and still make money. Between freelance work and my online projects, I could make money 24 hours a day.

It sounds easy doesn’t it? To begin with I doubt it is going to be very easy. For a few years at least (unless I come across that million dollar idea pretty fast) I will be working my heart out trying to make this work – and it might fail. But I need to try. If it works and I am successful then that is my dream realised, if not then I always have my IT career to fall back on and that really isn’t so bad either.

So – the big question I need to ask myself is – should I concentrate on my online future between now until August when I go back to Australia, or should I start looking for a job now?

Explore With Me v2 Launched

// April 9th, 2009 // No Comments » // Projects

Today we went live with the new version of Explore With Me. The site has been redesigned in order to give it more of a social feeling rather than it being a blog with a few members. While the site’s own blog is still a key part of Explore With Me, we are trying to encourage people to join, create their own blog and socialise with other members.

The changes from the previous version of the site aren’t that major, keeping the original template and just modifying the content areas. It still looks similar – just better!

The new site is being hosted on my new VPS, running WordPress MU 2.7 and BuddyPress. Hopefully within the next week or so WPMU 2.7.1 will be released and then BuddyPress v1 should follow shortly after that, which will require another small upgrade – and hopefully the last for the next few months!

The next area we are going to focus on developing are member features. As BuddyPress becomes more popular, the community will start to create plugins and other components that we will be able to implement and offer to our members.

Now the site is the way we want it, we are going to have to put a bit more effort in to keep it growing. We are aiming to blog a few times a week to keep the content fresh, and try to spread the word among young travellers, letting them know that we exist and are open for business.

Take a look at the new site – feedback is welcomed!
