Living the Internet Lifestyle

// April 14th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // General, Making Money

The more I concentrate on my internet projects, make money online and read about internet business success stories, the more I want to become a part of the internet lifestyle. Basically – I do not want to work a 9 – 5 job forever and I want the flexibility to “live” life and make money to support my lifestyle.

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to work for myself. I never wanted to be a small, tiny, non-existent employee apart of a massive global corporate world where people who are out of touch with reality make decisions that affect thousands of people – and that is what I am at the moment, just another replaceable employee working for a large firm.

I am not much of a risk taker when it comes to money, so I wouldn’t be the type to naturally just resign from my job and attempt to start an internet business without making sure I was generating enough income to survive before I left my job.

However – I am moving back to Australia in a few months and will obviously need to leave my job in Ireland to return home, so really it is a great excuse to attempt to build an internet business in the months leading up to my relocation and then concentrate on it once I return to Sydney and start to look for a job. If I am successful, then I can hold off looking for a job, and if not, then back to working 8 hours a day.

I am under no illusions of how difficult it will be starting my own internet based business – but at the same time I have had some luck with it in recent months. For one example, I have a number of freelance jobs in the next month that would make me enough money to survive on if I didn’t have my full time job wage.

To begin with, 8 hour days will seem like a dream compared to the hours that I will need to put in to make this successful. But in saying that, as I am working for myself, and with the time zone difference in Australia compared the rest of the world I can pretty much make up my own hours and decide when I want to work. Most of my freelance work so far has been in America and the UK, so being in Australia I can be more flexible with my time – and does “time” exist on the internet?

The reason for me wanting to be my own boss is so that I can do what I want, when I want. I could work anywhere in the world for months at the time, and still make the same amount of money. I can take a holiday whenever I want and still make money, I can sleep and still make money. Between freelance work and my online projects, I could make money 24 hours a day.

It sounds easy doesn’t it? To begin with I doubt it is going to be very easy. For a few years at least (unless I come across that million dollar idea pretty fast) I will be working my heart out trying to make this work – and it might fail. But I need to try. If it works and I am successful then that is my dream realised, if not then I always have my IT career to fall back on and that really isn’t so bad either.

So – the big question I need to ask myself is – should I concentrate on my online future between now until August when I go back to Australia, or should I start looking for a job now?

How to Make Money Online with PPCKahuna

// March 14th, 2009 // 2 Comments » // Making Money

You’re so inundated with all of the products that you hear about that can make you rich by making money online.  If they’re all true, then why aren’t we all rich?

Good question.  There are many ways to make money online, and there should be enough to go around for everyone.  Why, then are only some affiliates succeeding while others are failing?

Because the ones who succeed are remaining focused.  As affiliate marketers who are trying to make money online, you need to remember at all times what you’re trying to accomplish.  Those who are struggling to make money have lost their focus, and have become distracted from the core of their online business plan.

There are many ways to make money online; try them all at once and you’re guaranteed to fail.

In short, you can lose sight of your goals.  If you’ve decided that the best way to sell your products and earn you money is through PPC advertising, then what are you doing buying software to help you with list building?  You’re splitting your focus, and your business is hurting as a result.

If you’ve decided that PPC advertising is the way to go for your online business, then concentrate on that.  Learn as much as you can about PPC advertising, buy products to maximize your PPC campaign.  Don’t get distracted by all the other forms of advertising out there until you’ve given your PPC advertising campaign the attention it deserves.

The problem that most affiliate marketers encounter when they’re starting out get distracted by the sheer amount of advertising vehicles available to them.  List building one day, SEO the next, on to PPC and so forth.  They start out trying to understand their niche, get distracted by membership sites, and then that gets put on the back burner when they get this great email about how you can make a mint on Ebay.

All of this discussion begs the question:  what is your plan to make money online?   Out of all the different methods available, what do you think will work best for you?

If you do decide that PPC advertising is the way to go, then make a commitment to do it was thoroughly as possible.  Then, when the next interesting news about a great new product comes your way, you need to stop, and evaluate whether or not it will help you meet the goals that you’ve set for yourself.  If it doesn’t, then no matter how interesting it is, walk away, because it will just distract you from your goals.

So How Does PPC Kahuna Come Into All of This?

Why Most MMO Blogs Don’t Succeed

// October 2nd, 2008 // 1 Comment » // Making Money

There are so many make money online blogs on the Internet that never succeed – in fact I would say 99% of them don’t. It makes you wonder why people bother starting one when there is already so many on the Internet. I think people see it as an easy way to make money – however it is probably the hardest niche to break into.

Most of the MMO blogs that are created only last a few months. After the blogger realises the challenge in attracting traffic and more importantly, revenue, they just give up and stop posting – their blog goes to the place where websites go to die.

I started this blog as a project to see if I was able to create something from nothing and make money online – it is essentially a make money online blog. I am making money, however all the work I put into it, blogging everyday, researching make money methods, barely makes worth while the $35 I have made in the past 4 months.

I think most MMO bloggers will tell you not to start one when there are so many other niches you can blog about and make more money. Most of the biggest blogs on the Internet have nothing to do with telling others how to make money online yet they are easily able to live off the income they make.

I read an interesting comment on another MMO blog the other day that discussed this same topic. One of the comments said that the reason why most MMO blogs don’t succeed is because other bloggers are the ones who are reading the content.

I have to agree. Other bloggers are the ones visiting MMO blogs so they can monetise their own blog. Why would I click someones affiliate link when I can just click my own affiliate link to buy the same product?

This blog is a challenge to maintain, and it does take up a lot of my time. I said initially that I would give “Project Blogger” 12 months and then evaluate the blog and decide if I would continue. I am going to keep my word and finish the project.

I am starting to look at other niches now and I think I have some other opportunities to make money online without having to depend on this blog. I have plenty of other interests and hobbies that I am sure I can write about!

How I Make Money Online

// September 21st, 2008 // 2 Comments » // Making Money

I have added a new page to the blog that lists all the ways I have made money online. I have used the listed networks at one point or another so thought I would be a good idea to list them all so if you are new to blogging and want to start making money online you can get started easily enough.

I normally sign up to a few networks a month and see how they perform on the site. Some of them just don’t have the ads that I am looking for, so then I normally go on the lookout for another network that suits me and what I want out of it.

Each network has its own positives and you will have a different experience with them than I will, and vice versa. I think it depends on your type of blog or website as to whether the network suits you or not.

The text link ads are the ones that have made me the most money. I think it is because they are not so intrusive and if a keyword catches the eye of a user than they are more likely to click it. I am not a big clicker of banners myself so I don’t expect everyone to click all the banners that are on the blog.

You can find the new page in the top menu or just click here.

Are MMO Blogs Just Sales Sites?

// September 5th, 2008 // No Comments » // Making Money

I have been looking at a lot of “Make Money Online” blogs lately to try and see what they are doing and I am not. A lot of these sites claim to teach other bloggers how to make money online, but are they just self serving or do they really teach us bloggers how to make money online?

If you look at all of the popular make money online blogs, without mentioning any names, you will see that most of their posts are just sales advertisements promoting products that they hope you will purchase so they can make money from your sale.

If you look at their monthly earning reports, most of these affiliate sales are their primary source of income and the reason why they are so successful. They do promote the likes of Google Adsense and other ad networks, but the majority of their income comes from you.

These bloggers tend to promote a particular affiliate network, telling you how great it is and how much money they made last month from it, so that gets the readers thinking they are able to do the same so they sign up using the blogs referral link.

For each user that signs up to that particular network using that referral link, the blog that promoted the network receives a percentage of each sale make from that user, contributing to their income and helping them make money online.

MMO blogs also promote certain products, especially e-books, which are all aimed at making a sale. These products and e-books are normally a great read and do teach you a thing or two about making a successful money making website, though if you buy it you are still contributing to their income.

Are these types of bloggers just the new age of sales representatives? They are no different to the Avon lady turning up at your door step at dinner time trying to sell you face cream, or the sales man at your favourite electronics shop trying to sell you a home entertainment system. They all work on commission, and an affiliate is just another word for a sales rep.

I do promote some products on this blog, however everything I buy and recommend to you I have tried and tested and I wouldn’t tell you to go and buy it if I didn’t think it was worth it.

I wonder sometimes how many of these other bloggers try the products they are promoting. Surely if they post about a different product every day they cannot be trying all of them and they all cannot be fantastic and make they hundreds of dollars a month. How come we never read a bad review?

What do you think? Do you think MMO blogs actually teach you how to make money? Or do you think they are self serving and hope you contribute to their income?

So Why Can’t I?

// April 2nd, 2008 // 2 Comments » // Project Blogger

I have been off work the last few days, watching crappy day time TV and surfing the net. Lately I have been reading a bit about making money on the internet using blogs and buying/selling domain names.

I have been using the internet since I was about 14. I created my first website by 15. It was called “F1: Fast and Furious”, inspired by the Australian Formula 1 race I attended in March 1997. The website was fairly basic and contained F1 news, results and photos.

After running that site for about a year or so, I designed a few web sites for various companies and a few other personal sites. In 2001 I created another F1 site with a friend who owned a motorsport retail shop (www.gpshop.net). The site was very time consuming, providing news (sourced and written by myself), reviews, results, photos and even live timing. Since I ended working on that site at the end of the 2003 F1 season, I have not done much in terms of running web sites. I still design a few sites a year and try to keep up to date.

After reading about the people who created blog sites and now are making enough money to support themselves, I thought I might try it out, afterall, how hard can it be? If a 16 year old English kid can make “hundreds of thousands of pounds”, why can’t I?

So here goes. In the next few weeks I’ll be designing a new blog site (to replace this one), finding some advertising, networking with other “bloggers” and trying to build my online empire.

The long term plan? By the end of year I want to generate this blog into a revenue earning site. I don’t expect to earn enough money to support myself on this alone, though some extra cash wouldn’t hurt anyone, right?

So stay tuned as I blog the experience of trying to create something out of nothing, trying to turn a blog, which currently has 1 hit and earns $0, into something that will add a few more $$ to my bank account….
