I’m Baaaack!!

// September 8th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // General

Well I have returned from my holiday and have arrived back in Sydney for the first time in a few years. We saw a lot of Europe over the past month and it was a fantastic experience that everyone must do in their lifetime!

However all good things must come to an end and now it is time to get back to reality.

I have started looking for full time work this week. It doesn’t seem as bad out there as many have mentioned, but I’ll have to sit tight and wait for some interviews.

While I am off I will start to get back into blogging and working with WPMU and BP. I am planning on refocusing this blog and updating the design in the next week or so.

Explore With Me has done OK while we have been away. The 40 day tour blog got some good hits, however the main blog is still struggling and new members are few and far between. We’ll seriously have to look at that website and decide what to do with it in the near future. It may also be necessary to refocus the site and slim it down a bit. I think we are trying to do too many things with it at the moment.

Free BuddyPress Themes is the only blog of mine that has done well while I have been away. Traffic has been on the rise, even if no one is sending me new themes. Though the next version of BP is set to dramatically change the way themes are used so maybe people are holding off for that reason.

Expect some changes and annoucements over the next few weeks!

New Look

As you may have noticed, I have changed the theme of the blog. I think the other theme was a bit out-dated and didn’t really have what I was looking for in a theme.

I have downloaded this theme from Dezzain Studio after searching all over the net for a good looking theme. I was about to design my own when I stumbled onto the Dezzain Studio website. All of their themes are top quality and very professional looking.

I have added some six 125×125 advertisements from various affiliates that I have signed up to over the past few days. Market Leverage are responsible for four positions, Nameseek one, and Bidvertiser the final position. If anyone else does want to advertise I will open up 2 more positions on the right sidebar.

I have removed the Bidvertiser ads from the site and replaced them with Google Adsense. I wasn’t making anything from the Bidvertiser ads so I thought it might be a good time to see how the Google ads go.

I have also removed DealDotCom from the site also and I have not received anything from them and would rather use the space to advertise a 125×125 ad.

Kontera is the only original ad that remains on the site. I have had a few hits and made a little bit on the Kontera Content Links so at the moment there is no need to remove it.

So after a few months it was time to change a few things around to see if it generates some other interest. I still have not been blogging as much as I would have liked, though with Nameseek up and running I should now be able to concentrate on danielfelice.com.

How Long is Too Long?

// June 21st, 2008 // 1 Comment » // General

Attempting to build an online empire is no easy task. It requires a lot of time and dedication, not mention many late nights and early mornings working on new ideas and trying to figure out the best ways of driving hits and revenue to your online space.

Speaking from experience, working a 9 – 5 job and trying to maintain a few websites that, at the moment, don’t make me any money, means that I am in front of a computer screen for around 12 hours a day. Just to give you an idea of how much time out of my day that is, here is my daily itinerary.

7am – Wake up
8am – Get on the train to work
9am – Start Work
1pm – Lunch
5:30pm – Finish work
6:30pm – Arrive home
7pm – Dinner
8pm – Pickup the laptop and get working on my own projects
12am – Bed

I work in IT, so I am spending 8.5 hours a day at work on a computer doing work. When I get home after work and dinner, I get back on the laptop for another 4 hours or so to do some work on my own websites and online projects.

So I guess the question I am asking is how long is too long? It is healthy to spend so much time in front of a laptop working?

At the moment I am spending 20 hours a week, of my own time, working online trying to make some money. As my sites are only a month or two old, they need alot of work and I am spending my time trying to build a community around the site and let people know it actually exists. Once it starts to become known and I am happy with the amount of hits it is getting, it will pretty much run itself as maintenance will be fairly minimal.

Will I stop there? Once I am happy with my current project, will I start all over again? Probably.

However, the point of me attempting to make money online is to one day, hopefully soon, be able to leave my 9 – 5 job and concentrate 100% on my online projects.

It is a massive sacrifice in order to get your online project up and running. My girlfriend feels neglected and I am constantly tired. Though my girlfriend and I both agree that it will be worth it if one day I can stop working and concentrate on my online portfolio as if it was my full time job.

Not as Easy as it Looks!

So the blog has been up for nearly two months now. Initially the blog was set up to keep track of me and the experiences of trying to make money online. Well, I have to admit, there hasn’t many experiences as I have not had the time or motivation as I would have liked.

I think it is something that every blogger would go through from time to time. Why waste a few hours thinking and writing about something that 1 maybe 2 people will see? What is the point? It is hard to get motivted to blog every day when I look at the sites stats and see that there is barely a hit a day. But then I get one good day where the hits improve by about 1000% and it puts a smile on my face.

At least once a week the hits seem to go crazy for a few hours, then back down to where they have been for the majority of the time.

So why low hits? Well, if you look through the archive there hasn’t exactly been a great lot of content added to the site over the past two months. Due to a mixture of lack of time and lack of motivation, I have not put as much time as I would have liked into this blog.

I work with computers, I am on the internet every day for mroe than 8 hours, so surely I have enough to write about. I am currently working on Nameseek, which I mentioned in my last few posts. I am constantly searching ways to bring hits to the site, so I could write about that too. I could also write about my daily experiences at work. So there is definately no excuse not to blog at least a few times a week.

So hits or no hits, I am making more of an effort to blog at least 4 times a week. I might even spend some time creating a new design for this place, its a bit plain isn’t it??

Hits:

In the past two months the site has received a few hundred hits, mostly come from Entrecard. I doubt many of the visitors from Entrecard spend more than a minute on the site, let alone read the content. I am guessing everyone would drop their card and move on to the next site.

Google has brought me a handful of hits, and one user, also called Daniel Felice, contacted me via the form to see if I was the Daniel Felice who grew up in Sydney and played in the same cricket club as him. I am that Daniel Felice and we exchanged a few mails and determined that the world was pretty small as Felice would be a rare Maltese name, so to have two in Sydney and who played at the same cricket club, grew up in nearby suburbs was one in a billion.

Revenue:

In terms of revenue the site has made about $5. Not bad considering I have updating the blog a few times and not make much of an effort. Most of the money has come from Bidvertiser, and the rest from Kontera. Dealdotcom has not made me anything, so I might drop them and replace it with something else. But, I’ll wait another month or two and see how it goes with my new found motivation.

So thats the two monthly report, I’ll be back to report on the next month and on the progress of my current online project, Nameseek.com.au

It’s been a while…

// April 20th, 2008 // No Comments » // Project Blogger

It has been a few weeks since my last post. I have been flat out with my “real” job and also building a few websites of a night when I get home, so not much time for blogging!

I am actually amazed that my blog is still getting a steady number of daily hits, even though there hasn’t been a post for a few weeks and not much content to read in the first place! Thanks anyway!

I have just kicked off a new project that I will be lauching in the next few months. I won’t go into too much detail yet, though it does involve Domain Names and Australia. I think it is a good idea, but don’t we all think our idea’s are going to make up millions? This one won’t make me millions, but once it is up it will be bring in a bit of income once it gets some good marketing and a few advertising deals.

There will be a market for his “niche” and at the moment no one else is doing it, so it will be interesting to see how it goes.

Once the project is on the air, i’ll let you all know what is it. But I am excited about it and I really do think it is a winner.

I am also still looking at buying a few domain name’s and established websites. There are a few I am looking into at the moment, though it is just a matter of making sure it is worth the money being asked and whether I have the time to do it.

I will make another post this week with some details of the new project I am working on, and hopefully you think it is a good idea too!
